About Stephanie Owen, LMFT

I grew up in Los Angeles and became Licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I currently live in San Francisco and transitioned from therapy to coaching because of how often families came in when challenges seemed endless and the window of support almost too late. I'm a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator, founder of Motivational Parenting and author of the PARENTING shift: a practical guide to creating lasting change. I specialize working with single parents, provide workshops and guide one-on-one coaching virtually worldwide. My work integrates clinical knowledge of child development and discipline to improve family relationships in a positive way, earlier on.

Why did I start parenting coaching?

There were a few reasons that led me on the path to where I am now. I grew up with a single mom and 12 year younger sister. While my mom and sister were in Los Angeles and I was in San Diego completing my master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, I received many phone calls from my mom concerned and extremely frustrated with how to help my sister. I was the support for her, the only support she had. It was then that I knew how important parents need someone to vent to, to help guide, and just be there when you feel like there's no else to turn to. Even more, I witnessed first-hand how much more crucial that support is needed for single parents.

While I was on my journey as a therapist working with countless families, I experienced time and again parents feeling like they were "too late" to make any changes with their kids. It was then that my vision became more clear with how to support families. My mission unfolded to supporting parents in feeling confidentcongruent and conscious. My intention is to provide a non-judgmental space to problem-solve and improve family relationships.

Why work with me?

I blend tools from Positive Discipline and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Positive Discipline is a solution-oriented approach focused on connection, mutual respect and identifying your kids underlying emotional and developmental needs. Many have the misconception that Positive Discipline is all "positive," rather, it's about bringing kindness and firmness together and inviting your kids to discover what they're capable of.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is focused on your model of the world and how it shapes your family relationships and experiences. I incorporate it to support in shifting core beliefs that aren't serving your goals, as well as identifying verbal (internal and external dialogue) and non-verbal communication to align with the parent you want to be. To put it another way, working with the limitations in your thinking, which directly affect the limitations in your behaviors.

I combine practical parenting tools, clinical expertise and personal experience to guide you to feeling confident that your everyday choices with your kids to ultimately parent on purpose.
